Somewhere between here and the edge of town
the brook flows from the mountains,
cuts a meandering line through the valley;
schools of minnows dart around rocks
and Canada geese nest along its edges.
It’s been this way since the Lenape
inhabited this land.
You take those tentative steps to the bank
to find that the water has receded, dried up
in your absence, leaving behind stones worn
smooth, sun-baked moss, and a single dead fish
who waited too long to follow the water.
Remember, in this, you had a choice. You still do.
