Interrogating the Body: Review of Thanatology by Gretchen Rockwell

Thanatology by Gretchen Rockwell Ghost City Press, 2020 In xer heroic crown of sonnets, Gretchen Rockwell invites us to navigate the meaning of the body. An examination and modern ode, Thanatology (Ghost City Press, 2020) carefully delves into history, revealing that in the search for knowledge, “no violation was too great.” The elegantly linked sonnets transport us from anatomical theatres to the Ötztal Alps, peat bogs, pharaoh tombs, crime scenes, and body farms. The question: “What can the body tell us?” echoes off the facets of each sonnet, returning with the song of “findings,” the departed “speak[ing] in quiet voices.” Yes, we can hear the dead, Rockwell tells us, “if we are able to/tune out the buzz of fluorescents long enough to listen.” Visit Gretchen Rockwell's Website Visit Ghost City Press' Website
