The Morning Joe Biden Declares His 2020 Candidacy
I remember racing
in elementary school, our vast
public school playground like a vacant lot,
its sagging fence buckling in the wind.
Standing on the white line, bracing
one leg strong and tense, twitching
for takeoff, I barely heard the other girls
cheering behind me as my ears
anticipated Go. Back then,
I was one of the only girls
who could beat boys. It didn’t last long.
I don’t mean that they started beating me.
I mean I stopped running.
