Real
For the first time, I saw a woman
love another woman firsthand.
I saw that it was more
than a daydream — more
than something I had imagined
or heard of, but a real reality
and possible possibility that I could
possibly really experience. Maybe.
Flowers flew from my mouth,
bloomed in midair. Someone once
said Anything is possible, and I called
them a filthy liar. It doesn’t matter
whom you love, as long as you
are happy, said no one ever.
Love is love, no one said —
at least not in this tiny town.
But as I thought of you sprawled
on the grass in the afternoon heat,
skin everywhere, me falling
for your musician-like fingers,
your half-painted toes, I thought
maybe you’ll let me trace the lines
on your palm, let me
kiss the honey of your hand.
