After a Man Dies in His Own Apartment of a Gunshot Wound
When I tuck my daughter in at night
I warn her of the boogie man,
how at any moment he’ll barge
through the closet door
fangs bared, dreaming
of meat.
But there are rules, Daddy
— she protests.
He only aims to scare,
not strike.
I cup my hands against
her cheek and mutter:
Don’t be fooled, little one.
He’ll do both
before he eats
you whole.
