One Summer
For that summer when we grew
Into our skins by slow degrees
To a tune on a herring bone sky
To the reek of melting tar
And spurts of petrichor
As the dry earth spasmed
Under sporadic storms
The skin tightened on our bones.
That summer made us
Shed our shackles, grow wings
Learn to curse and take spirits
Until they burned holes in our gut.
Rendered us gagging and speechless
Taken with whatever was given
Passed from hand to mouth
In trysts of phlegmatic trust
Time was wide and ephemeral
We were young, the world needed us.
