Submission Guidelines: Glass: A Journal of Poetry
Glass does not charge any reading fees or hold any contests. We read submissions for the journal from June through February each year. In March and April, we read submissions and make final decisions for the Glass Chapbook Series. For chapbook submissions guidelines, please see the Glass Poetry Press guidelines page. We are interested in poetry that enacts the artistic and creative precision of glass. We are not bound by any specific aesthetic; our only mission is to publish high quality poetry. All styles, forms and schools of poetry are welcome, though easy rhymes and "light" verse are less likely to inspire us. We like poems that show a careful understanding of language, music, passion and creativity. The best way to get to know our tastes is to purchase a copy of one (or more) of our chapbooks or to read the Glass: A Journal of Poetry archives. Our mission is to engage with the wider literary community. To do this, we are committed to publishing a variety of new, emerging and established voices. Further, we are committed to inclusion and equity in publishing. We highly encourage submissions from underrepresented voices including, but not limited to, women poets, poets of color, LGBTQ poets, poets living with poverty, and incarcerated poets. Unfortunately, we are unable to pay you for your poems other than through publication. Accepted poems will be published on the Glass website in perpetuity. If your work is accepted, we request First North American serial rights as well as the right to archive your work on our website and to use your work, with credit given to you as the author, for promotional purposes. Otherwise, upon publication, all rights revert back to the author under the condition that you will credit Glass: A Journal of Poetry as the original publisher should your work be reprinted.

Graphic Poetry

Similar to graphic novels, graphic poetry combines poetry and art in an integral way. Examples include "Stairs Appear in a Hole Outside of Town" by John Philip Johnson and Julian Peters, "From" by Fatimah Asghar and Eve L. Ewing, or "The Wrong Side of Rapture" by Traci Brimhall and Eryn Cruft. Recent examples of graphic poetry in Glass include the work of Nicole McCarthy and Naoko Fujimoto. Graphic poetry submissions may be collaborations or the poetry and the art can be by the same creator but the poetry and the art must be original and previously unpublished. Individual pieces can be a single page/image or multiple pages/images. Submissions should follow standard guidelines, except they may be submitted as .jpg, .png, or .pdf files. Also, please note in your cover letter that you are submitting graphic poetry.

Portfolio Submissions

Glass is committed to publishing and promoting new and emerging voices. As part of this mission, we seek submissions to our Portfolio Series, a series designed to highlight the range and voice of new writers. This series will spotlight a series of ten to fifteen pieces by a single author. Work within the portfolios need not be interconnected, though they can be. Instead, the Portfolio Series is designed to offer readers a wider look at the depth and range of the author's work than is typically possible in the journal. The Portfolio Series will be published on a rolling basis, with the schedule to be determined by Glass and the poet. To be considered for the Portfolio Series, please follow these guidelines: The Portfolio Series is limited to new poets only. We define this as an author who has not published a full length or a chapbook collection of poems. Emphasis will be given to poets whose work has not been widely published. Please submit 10-20 poems, any style, any length, to submissions@glass-poetry.com. Please add this email to your safe email list to ensure that you receive our reply. No snail mail submissions will be accepted. The Portfolio should be attached to the email in one .doc, .docx, or .pdf file. Please include a cover letter with a brief bio in the body of the email. Please put "[Your Name]: Portfolio Submission" in the subject line of the email, replacing "[Your Name]" with your name. Manuscripts should be single spaced and written in a standard font and standard size (12 pt. Times New Roman, for example) with standard (at least 1 inch) margins. Some of the poems in the Portfolio may have been previously published in literary journals, but the majority of the submission should be unpublished. If any of the poems were previously published, please indicate which ones and where they were published in the cover letter. Individual poems from Portfolio submissions will also be considered for the monthly journal. Response times may vary. We hope to reply within eight to sixteen weeks. If you have not received a response to your submission within four months, please send us an email.
